Social Media & Electronic Communication Policy
Being an athlete on the Sparta High School Alpine Racing Ski Team is a privilege. Student-athletes are seen as role models. You are responsible for representing the ski team, the school, and yourself in a positive and respectful manner online and in all electronic communications.
This policy applies to all social media, internet activity, and electronic communication, including but not limited to:
- Social media platforms (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, X, etc.)
 - Messaging apps (Snapchat, WhatsApp, GroupMe, Remind, etc.)
 - Text messages, group chats, blogs, forums, and any online comment areas
 

Expectations
Students will not engage in:
- Harassment, bullying, demeaning, threatening, or offensive behavior
 - Posting inappropriate images, videos, or statements
 - Sharing confidential or sensitive information
 
Remember: Everything you post online is public and permanent, even if access is restricted. Posts can affect your reputation, college admissions, and future employment.
Guidelines for Positive Online Behavior
Do:
- Praise teammates and team efforts
 - Thank coaches, referees, league representatives,, mountain staff, volunteers and bus driver for their support
 - Act as a positive role model for other students
 - Think before posting, consider how it reflects on you and the team
 
Don’t:
- Insult teammates, opponents, coaches, or schools
 - Harass others or mention race, religion, sexual orientation, or physical condition
 - Share inappropriate images, videos, or content depicting violence, hazing, sexual harassment, substance use, or vandalism
 - Participate in online “challenges” or arguments
 
Consequences for Policy Violations
Violations may result in immediate action, including:
- Posting removal
 - Probation, suspension, or removal from the Sparta Ski Team
 - Revocation of awards or captain titles
 - For seniors: rescinding of the Ski Booster Club scholarship, if applicable
 - Required apology for misconduct
 
The Head Coach, Athletic Director, and School Administration have authority to enforce these consequences on the first offense if necessary.
Important Notes
- Freedom of speech online is not unlimited. Inappropriate posts are subject to team and school discipline.
 - This policy is in addition to the Sparta Township Public Schools Student Handbook and its Student Code of Conduct.
 - Your behavior online should always reflect the values of the Sparta Ski Team: respect, sportsmanship, and leadership.
